As you breathe, oxygen enters your lungs and is then transferred into your blood. Your red blood cells carry this oxygen to your muscles and organs. To generate ATP, which is the primary energy currency of the body, your muscle cells require oxygen. This ATP supplies the necessary energy for your muscles to move and perform work. Your breathing rate increases with exertion because a greater intake and use of oxygen results in more ATP production.
An elevated VO2Max score indicates that your cardiovascular and muscular systems are functioning with high efficiency, meaning your body is better at absorbing, transporting, and using oxygen.
