During respiration, your lungs draw in oxygen, which then enters your bloodstream. This oxygen is then carried by red blood cells to your various organs and muscles. To generate ATP, which is the primary energy currency of the body, your muscle cells require oxygen. The energy necessary for muscular movement and physical effort is supplied by ATP. Your rate of breathing increases during exertion because a greater intake and use of oxygen leads to higher ATP production.
