Proactive Care For Future Well-being

Approximately one-third of a woman's life occurs after menopause, which is about 33 years based on an average menopause age of 51 and an EU female life expectancy of 84. Women can also spend as long as 10 years navigating perimenopause symptoms. This means that for nearly half of their lives, women may experience a range of symptoms that reduce their quality of life and productivity.

Patients undergoing HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) frequently report that they “feel like themselves again.” For this reason, determining the correct treatment schedule and dosage is a valuable investment in the next 30 to 40 years of your life.

A basic guide to help identify which hormone level may be low:

  • Low Progesterone: You might experience feelings of anxiety, irritation, and being overstimulated.
  • Low Estrogen: You might feel dry, overheated, and prone to crying.
  • Low Testosterone: You might feel fatigued, physically weak, and lacking in motivation.

It's important to know that symptoms and their intensity can differ greatly from one woman to another. Hormones can also have overlapping or synergistic effects. Addressing and resolving symptoms is typically a gradual and adaptive process.

A Body-Wide Guide to Hormonal Symptoms

  • Sleep: Insufficient Progesterone disrupts sleep and causes nighttime awakenings (from a loss of the GABA calming effect); low Estrogen is responsible for night sweats and waking in the early morning.
  • Mood: A lack of Progesterone contributes to irritability and anxiety; low Estrogen is associated with depression and anhedonia; insufficient Testosterone lowers motivation and assertiveness.
  • Menstrual Cycle: Inadequate Progesterone leads to heavy and irregular menstrual bleeding (due to unopposed estrogen); low Estrogen leads to shorter or absent cycles.
  • Vasomotor Symptoms: A deficiency in Estrogen is the main cause of hot flashes and nocturnal sweating.
  • Libido & Sexual Function: Low Estrogen results in vaginal dryness and discomfort; a lack of Testosterone is the main factor behind a decrease in spontaneous desire and less intense orgasms.
  • Cognitive Symptoms: Insufficient Estrogen is a cause of "brain fog" and memory difficulties; low Testosterone impairs strategic thinking and mental sharpness.
  • Metabolism: Low Estrogen leads to the accumulation of abdominal fat and insulin resistance; insufficient Testosterone results in the loss of lean muscle, which slows the metabolic rate.
  • Skin & Hair: A lack of Estrogen diminishes collagen and skin elasticity; low Testosterone may be a factor in thinning hair.
  • Bone & Muscle: A deficiency in Estrogen is a primary cause of osteoporosis and sarcopenia; low Testosterone weakens physical endurance and muscle power.
  • Urogenital Health: Insufficient Estrogen causes Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (resulting in atrophy, itching, and recurring UTIs).

An Overview of the Treatment Approach

HRT is a personalized and evolving process, customized to your individual biological needs. In contrast to a one-size-fits-all prescription, your physician will fine-tune dosages and schedules based on your blood work and how you track your symptoms. The approach is usually to stabilize one hormone before adding another, with follow-up appointments then scheduled every 3–6 months.

  • Progesterone (Oral Micronized): Plant-sourced and well-absorbed, bioidentical progesterone offers benefits like safeguarding the uterine lining, balancing hormones, easing anxiety, and enhancing sleep. The typical protocol is 100mg–200mg taken at night (as it may induce drowsiness). Women in perimenopause generally use it during the latter half of their cycle (days 14–28), whereas women with erratic cycles and those in post-menopause take it daily.
  • Estradiol (Transdermal): Administering estradiol through the skin (gels/patches) is safer than oral forms. While oral estrogen may increase the risk of blood clots fourfold, studies (such as BMJ 2019) demonstrate that transdermal application has no such elevated risk because the hormone is absorbed directly into the bloodstream via the skin. Gels are often used initially to allow for easy dosage adjustments, with symptom relief typically noticeable after 4–8 weeks of regular use.
  • Transdermal Testosterone: Testosterone can improve libido and energy, although formulations for women are uncommon outside of Australia. The dose is quite small (about 300mcg/day), as higher amounts can trigger acne or hair growth.
  • Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA): This is occasionally used as a hormonal precursor, though its effectiveness when taken orally can vary. Note that vaginal DHEA is intended for local atrophy treatment and not for systemic hormone replacement.
  • Medical Supervision: All forms of HRT must be prescribed and monitored by a qualified medical professional.

Timeline of Hormone Replacement Therapy Results

  • First Few Weeks You may start to feel some initial relief from symptoms, like better sleep, mood, or energy levels. The timing depends on the hormone you begin with. Progesterone often works more rapidly, while Estradiol requires at least 2 to 4 weeks for minor changes to become apparent. This is when you will establish your application routine.
  • 1 to 3 Months During this phase, your dosage is fine-tuned, as this therapy is personalized to your symptoms. If symptoms reappear, the dosage is adjusted upwards. If you notice side effects like breast tenderness or migraines, we may lower the estrogen. Ideally, your mood will start to stabilize and your energy will rise. The frequency of hot flashes or night sweats should also diminish.
  • 3 to 6 Months This is the period when most individuals report significant improvement, since transdermal Estradiol and Testosterone need time to take full effect. Hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness usually improve substantially, and mood fluctuations become far less common.
  • 6 to 12 Months At this point, you are experiencing the complete impact of the treatment and a noticeable enhancement in your quality of life. You have a better grasp of ongoing changes and can adjust the dose or administration method if needed.
  • Month 13 Onwards Long-term, additional advantages continue to build, such as stronger bones (which lowers osteoporosis risk) and improved heart health, contributing to your wellness as you age. Please note these outcomes are most effective when supported by strength training, a healthy diet, and sufficient protein.

Testimonials

What our customers say about us

Julia, 46 – HRT & Strength
When I saw how much muscle mass I had lost, I finally understood why I felt weaker. It took longer than I expected to get my hormone levels properly adjusted, but once they were stable, my sleep and daily energy improved dramatically. Combining this with regular strength training has made me noticeably stronger and more resilient in everyday life.
Anna, 44 – HRT & Sleep
I never realized how much my hormones were affecting my sleep until I have taken progesterone. After adjusting my therapy and tracking my sleep for six weeks, I went from waking up four or five times a night to sleeping through almost every night. It’s such a relief to finally wake up feeling rested and ready for the day.
Pia, 45 – Menopause & Brain Fog
I thought I was losing my mind. I’d forget simple words in the middle of sentences. Realizing it was just the estrogen drop was a huge relief.
Anna, 49 – Menopause & Sleep
The night sweats were brutal—I was waking up drenched and exhausted every single night. I was so irritable with my family. Once I balanced my hormones, I finally got my sleep back.
Anita, 54 – Menopause & Anxiety
Nobody told me about the sudden heart palpitations and anxiety. I felt on edge for no reason. Learning it was hormonal made so much sense.
